  1. The study

You are invited to participate in a study on ways we communicate. We greatly appreciate your participation. This study is conducted and financed by Marianne Schmid Mast of HEC Lausanne, University of Lausanne (UNIL) (« fund number 26052747 / BA SNF fund »).

Your participation in this study will help us test and produce stimuli for further studies investigating how people communicate. Your participation will help us test the functionality of an app created specifically for this research project. We might contact you via Prolific to invite you to participate in further studies related to this research project, but you are under no obligation to participate in any further studies related to this research project if you do not wish to do so.

  2. Outline of the study procedure

Please note that part of this experiment requires you to record audio. Please complete this study in a quiet environment with no background noise.

Please note that this study will be very difficult to complete if you are colorblind, have hearing or speaking issues.

The experiment consists of 2 parts.

    • Part 1 is solely individual and firstly consists of a short questionnaire and a hearing test. Then you will be given general instructions on the 2-person coordination game that you will play anonymously with others in Part 2. The rest of Part 1 consists of a microphone check and an individual practice session in preparation of Part 2.
    • In Part 2 you will play a 2-person coordination game. You will play at least one round but no more than 9 rounds.

    This is one round:

    • Player 1 is given the task of describing a painting. Player 1 needs to describe this painting via a 30 to 60 second audio recording.
    • This recording will be made available to Player 2, who will see 3 paintings on their screen, one of which is the same painting that Player 1 has described.
    • Player 1 will listen to the recording that Player 2 has made and then will select the painting that they think has been described in the recording.
    • Then Player 2 is given the task of describing a painting via audio recording, in as much detail as possible.
    • Player 1, will see 3 paintings on their screen, one of which is the same painting that Player 1 has described and will listen to the recording made by Player 2 and then will select the painting that they think has been described in the recording.

During the experiment, you will be able to earn points. Your total income earned during the experiment is therefore calculated first in points and then your total score achieved by you during the experiment is converted into £ at the end of the study, such that 10 points = 1£. In addition to your income from the experiment, you will receive the Prolific participation fee of 4£ for 30 min of your time.

In Part 1, you will have opportunities to earn points based on your individual performance.

In Part 2, you will have opportunities to earn more points based jointly on your performance and the performance of others.

You will also have to answers various questionnaires.

You will need about 30 minutes to complete the study.

If you decide to participate in the study, we ask you to commit seriously to the study. Any inappropriate behavior may lead to immediate expulsion from the recruitment platform and from all future HEC-LABEX studies.

  3. Remuneration

At the end of the study, you will be awarded 4£ for your participation and a bonus ranging from 1£ to 5.50£ depending on your individual and joint performance in a multi-round coordination game. The total amount you will receive will be between 4£ and 9.50£ at completion of this study.
